Pare

Choreographer ::

2017-2019

This evening-length work is the culmination of three years of embodied research with my Collaborators Katie Martin, Jenny Bennett, Kate Martel, Leah Fournier, and Sarah Lass. Pare interweaves formal constructions and deliberate unraveling, drawing from two primary sources: my personal loss of my childhood home in a fire, and the #metoo movement as a crisis point. Pare foregrounds intimate physical contact as a means both of reshaping trauma, and imagining alternatives to hierarchical relationships.

Reviews, Commentaries, and Downloads

Dramaturgical note from Meredith Bove:

“In Barbie’s work, the ability to be grand, virtuosic, and astonishing lives alongside nuance, the quotidian, and strangeness. Barbie’s work invites us to attend deeply to the present, while equally taking stock of what’s come before, revealing the intimacy possible when we attune to finer and finer frequencies. In creating the conditions for looking closely, our multiple, complicated, contradictory, entangled selves are illuminated. Herein lies a radical presence— truly the theater’s most valuable currency, its holiest attribute, its most haunting gift.”
