To become an apparition is also to become endlessly capable of appearing.
-Terry Castle, The Apparitional Lesbian
“Apparition” is a companion work to my work-in-progress “Lexicon.” The title cites Terry Castle’s “The Apparitional Lesbian,” and the work explores the lesbian aesthetics, affects, and attributes that are appearing in my archival research at Jacob’s Pillow. The students approached the research with curiosity, challenging questions, and maturity, and I am very proud of the work we made over the course of seven weeks of rehearsal. It was described to me by colleagues as “haunting,” and “charged.” I have been wanting to weave together my choreographic research and teaching more directly for years, and this was an exciting first step.
